Celebrate the Dog Days of Summer in KC
As we get deeper into August – we’re hitting the dog days of summer—the hottest stretch of the year. Often temperatures are inching towards double digits, and the heat may have you itching to stay home, but your four-legged friend probably wants to get out and celebrate their namesake season. Fortunately (for your dog), there are plenty of spots in Kansas City where you and your pup can soak in the summer.
Yappy Hour at Iron Horse
Bring your dog and cool off with a drink at Iron Horse Bar & Grill in Leawood during their weekly Sunday “Yappy Hour.” From 1 pm to 5 pm on the patio, pups can chow down on $8.50 Doggy Dinners and $6 treats. At the same time, humans can sip on cleverly named cocktails, like Tito’s Greyhounds, Salty Dogs and Dog and Pony Frozen Froses, with a portion of sales being donated to Wayside Waifs, a local animal shelter. $5 Mimosas and KC Bloody Marys are also available on Sundays from open to close.
Dog Days of Summer at East Forty Brewing
It’s your pups’ season, so why not spoil them a little? On Saturday, August 2 from 1 pm to 5 pm, East Forty Brewing is hosting a dog-themed vendor event. In the Mill Room, a variety of trainers, sitters, treats, raw foods, costumes, leashes and other items will be available. Plus, the Heart of America Humane Society will be on-site with some dogs ready for adoption. With summer heat in full swing, your dog can cool off in doggie wading pools at the event, while you stay refreshed with a cold beer in hand. Dog Days Wheat, a crowd favorite, will be on draft, along with two new variations: mango and mango habanero.
Paws in the Pool
What better way to celebrate the sweaty dog days than with Paws in the Pool, a pool party just for pups? On August 9 from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. at Flat Rock Creek Pool in Lenexa, dogs can swim for $8 to $10, depending on registration date. And as hot as you may be, this event is dogs only in the pool—oh, the things we do for our pets.
Doggie Dip Day
It’s time for the annual Doggie Dip Day at Belton Outdoor Water Park. This dog friendly event will be held from 9 am to 11 am on August 23 at Belton Outdoor Water Park in Belton. Admission is $5 per dog.
Pups can enjoy a refreshing swim and playtime in the pool, while owners browse local vendors offering special treats and goodies. Please bring current vaccination records.
Mutts & Movies
Join the Pet Resource Center of Kansas City for its first annual Mutts & Movies Friday, August 29th, at the iconic Boulevard Drive-In Theatre. This special outdoor movie night celebrates PRCKC’s anniversary and raises funds to support affordable, life-saving veterinary care for pets in our community. Bring your family, friends, and furry companions for an evening of fun starting at 5:30 pm with our Animal Wellness Festival. Enjoy a variety of local vendors, raffles, a dunk tank, and classic fair games. Shop for pet goodies, learn about animal wellness, and try your luck at winning some great prizes.
With this summer lineup of events, your pup is sure to feel as celebrated as they deserve to be.
