Country Club Plaza sale is looming
It’s official – well almost. The impending sale of the Country Club Plaza is expected to be finalized June 28 with a press conference led by KC Mayor Quinton Lucas to welcome the new owners on Monday.
The ownership group, HP Village Partners, is a luxury retail company whose principal owners are descendents of H.L. Hunt, father of Kansas City Chiefs founder Lamar Hunt. Village Partners is best known for its Dallas property Highland Park Village, a luxury shopping district built in 1931 and similar to the Plaza.
The former owners, Taubman Center Inc. and Macerich Co., bought the property in 2016 for $660 million and defaulted on their debt in May 2023, according to filings with the Securities and Exchange Commission.
The Plaza has come upon hard times in recent years, with empty story fronts dotting the 15 block shopping district and shoppers staying away due to safety concerns. Then, of course, the three-acre lot on the west side that was supposed to become home to a new Nordstrom has remained vacant for several years.
The sale has generated quite an optimistic buzz, with hope that new ownership can revitalize the plaza, bringing the 15-block shopping center back to its former glory. Lucas is optimistic that the city and new owners can partner in a way that will benefit both entities, all the while ensuring the Plaza remains KC’s “crown jewel,” Lucas says.
