Eleven Things To Do In KC This Weekend, March 20—23

by Nina Cherry

Here are eleven things to do in KC this weekend, March 20—March 23, including Felipe Torres Medina, Planet Comicon and Heartland Men’s Chorus’ Y’all Means All.

In Community Studio Night: Hambre

The Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art’s In Community workshop is inspired by the imagery of current exhibit Lucía Vidales: Hambre, on display throughout July. Led by local artist Juan Diego Gaucin, supplies are provided at the donation-based studio night. Artists of all experience levels are welcome.

March 20. 6 pm. Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art.

Felipe Torres Medina

Author Felipe Torres Medina’s latest book, America, Let Me In, is a sardonic and realistic look into the United States’ immigration process. A staff writer for The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, the Colombian author and comic’s book is based on his own experience immigrating, aiming to make the cumbersome process more accessible and poke a little fun, too. Tickets to the event, presented by Rainy Day Books, include a copy of the book, comedy performance, moderated discussion and book signing from Torres Medina.

March 20. 6 pm. The Bird Comedy Theater.

NAIA Men’s Basketball Championship

Since 1937, with the exception of just a few years, KC has played host to a national college basketball tournament founded by the sport’s inventor James Naismith. Now featuring 237 small colleges and universities, the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA)––the first student sports organization to invite historically Black institutions––now counts 237 mostly small universities and colleges. Regional winners will compete in 15 elimination games for the championship title at Municipal Auditorium.

Don Quixote

Step into a world of adventure, romance and whimsy as the Kansas City Ballet brings Don Quixote to life. Based on Miguel de Cervantes’ classic novel, the ballet follows the noble Don Quixote and his squire Sancho Panza’s quest, as well as a blossoming love between Kitri and Basilio. Although the lush orchestration has been a long-time labor of love for the dance company’s music director Ramona Pansegrau, the production marks the first time the ballet has been performed in KC.

Presented by Kansas City Actors Theatre, the play follows the stringent principal of a Bronx Catholic school who grows wary of the charismatic priest’s relationship with a student as she grapples with the fine line between truth and perception.
