Mo’ Pies Is Opening a Storefront in Leawood

by Tyler Shane

Mo’ Pies quickly became a local favorite when it launched in 2020. It’s no secret why the pie pop-up has been such a hit: Mo’ Pies’ owner Curt Lafferty worked as an executive for Tippin’s Pies for nearly twenty years. Now, after five years of popping up at farmers markets throughout the metro, Lafferty has officially locked down a brick-and-mortar in Leawood (7956 Lee Blvd., Leawood, KS).

The new site, formerly Classic Kitchen Designs Studio, sits in the Somerset Shops. While the space will eventually include a full production kitchen, Lafferty will begin by operating as a pop-up through the holiday season. Customers will pick up their online orders from the new storefront while Lafferty continues baking from a commercial kitchen elsewhere. If Thanksgiving and Christmas go smoothly, he hopes to have the full kitchen build-out complete and the store fully operational next year.

Still, the 2,500 square-foot storefront will primarily serve as a pickup point for online orders. Because parking is limited and the lot is one-way in, one-way out, Lafferty recommends following signs to help with the flow of foot and car traffic.

This Thanksgiving, demand is already “exceeding expectations,” according to Lafferty, and he recommends getting your orders in as a soon as possible. (Place your online order here). Customers can choose from favorites like chocolate bourbon pecan, pumpkin, French silk and Turtle pie (basically a French silk variation but with caramel and chocolate ganache). For Christmas, look for a chocolate peppermint pie topped with candy canes and German chocolate. Lafferty says the shop will accept limited walk-ins but ordering online in advance is the only way to ensure you’ll walk away with pie in-hand.

  • Thanksgiving 2025 pickup: Nov. 24–26, 10 a.m.–6 p.m.
  • Christmas 2025 pickup: Dec. 22–24, 10 a.m.–6 p.m.

Beyond the holidays, Mo’ Pies fans can look forward to new and returning seasonal flavors. Lafferty is excited to eventually offer banana cream pie (it’ll only be available for day-of pickup due to its short two-day shelf life). Other rotating favorites include jalapeno apple and cherry limeade in the summer months, and savory options like quiche, shepherd’s pie, and chicken pot pie during the colder season.

Mo’ Pies will continue popping-up at the Lee’s Summit, Overland Park and Parkville farmers markets. Lafferty works the Overland Park Farmers Market himself, where he enjoys the rare chance to interact with his customers. When asked what makes Lafferty’s pie stand out from the others in town, he says it comes down to two things.

“First is the crust, it’s so flaky and flavorful,” says Lafferty. “The second is our fruit pies. I always hear that the fruit pies taste like the fruit it’s supposed to be. The blueberry tastes like blueberry, the peach tastes like peach.”

Fruit pies tasting like their fruit flavoring may sound obvious, but baking fruit can change the flavor profile quite a bit. Laffery says he doesn’t add much sugar, but carefully sources fruit from different parts of the country. The cherry pie for example, is made with dark cherries from northern states and tart from the southern states, and it’s a customer favorite.
