Andrea Carlson: Shimmer on Horizons Opening Celebration

Through painting, sculpture and video, the Kemper Museum’s latest exhibit, Andrea Carlson: Shimmer on Horizons, features landscapes of what Carlson calls “everywhere and nowhere.” Learn more about the installation (which runs through February 15) directly from Carlson at her artist talk, followed by a reception.

Gregory Alan Isakov

South African-born singer-songwriter Gregory Alan Isakov used to be a horticulturist before turning to another study—music. Quickly becoming a major player in the indie-folk scene with albums like That Sea, the Gambler and The Weatherman, his music uses banjos and violins and sometimes brings in orchestras and whimsical elements like whistles to bring a down-home feel to his songwriting.

August 28. 7:30 pm. The Midland Theatre.

Pete Fucinaro Little Window Album Release

KC saxophonist Pete Fucinaro celebrates the release of his album Little Window. Recorded at upstate New York’s Clubhouse Recording Studio, the transcendent contemporary jazz project features Ebba Dankel—a rising star on the East Coast scene—on vocals, piano and synthesizer. Fucinaro will be joined by his quartet: guitarist Ethan Ditthardt, bassist Jared Beckstead-Craan and drummer Alex Souris.

August 28. 9 pm. The Ship.

Jimmy Buffett Day

Enjoy a staycation (and a salted rim) this Labor Day weekend at KCK’s recently opened Margaritaville Hotel. Proceeds from the all-day affair support Buffet’s foundation Singing for Change, which assists small nonprofits focused on low income communities.
