Rye’s Leawood location has expanded. Well, kind of. Okay, not really.
While the Midwestern restaurant itself isn’t expanding, owner and award-winning pastry chef Megan Garrelts has officially opened Cornflower Baked Goods, a bakery, right next door. Garrelts’ pastries and pies have long been popular staples at Rye, and the new bakery’s large kitchen will also supply the restaurant, allowing Rye to expand its dessert menu.
If you’re one of those devoted customers who has anxiously waited on hold to place a pre-order for a Rye Thanksgiving pie, you already know how delicious Garrelts’ wares are. When it comes to her new bakery, think beyond pies; lemon meringue squares, brown butter peach cake, rich chocolate brownies and more will grace the menu. The Mission Farms space is washed with white and royal blue, the bakery’s signature colors, and a large counter wraps around an open kitchen, featuring a coffee bar serving Onyx Coffee Lab. There’s a display for pastries and also a refrigerated grab-and-go shelf showcasing a variety of treats, such as Garrelts’ dessert sauces, canned cocktails and more savory concoctions like sandwiches. The west wall features a blown-up image of one of Garrelts’ mom’s recipes. Her mother’s recipes are the inspiration behind Cornflower Baked Goods’ offerings, meaning they’re meant to be comforting, appetizing and feel like home.
Garrelts was a James Beard Award semifinalist for Outstanding Pastry Chef, and her work has been featured in Bon Appétit, Food & Wine, The Wall Street Journal and Saveur. Cornflower Baked Goods is a natural next step for one of Kansas City’s most accomplished pastry chefs and has been a long time coming.
