This riff on an old fashioned is the tip of the eclectic iceberg at The Brick
The Brick is a dive bar, but it doesn’t want to be put in a box. Its design combines mermaids, Mardi Gras and local art. Its entertainment programming ranges from Rural Grit bluegrass each Monday to album release parties for local punk bands. And its menu? That’s where things get even more interesting.
Since 1999, The Brick (1727 McGee St., KCMO) in East Crossroads has been serving food and drinks in front of its small stage. Sure, there are burgers and onion rings, what one expects from a place with vinyl booths and walls covered in Sharpie love notes. But there is also a vegan meatloaf, an apple butter and brie sandwich, and a Kansas City Reuben hot dog. So why should the cocktail menu be any less eclectic?
The Revolver is an interpretation of an old fashioned that—you guessed it—can’t be put into a box. In addition to bourbon and a dash of simple syrup and orange bitters, St. George NOLA Coffee Liqueur takes its turn as a well-balanced featured ingredient.
It may appeal to long-time fans of the cocktail who appreciate a riff, just as it may be an entry point for someone who longs to enjoy old fashioneds but finds them too strong or full-bodied. This one is light and as crushable as an old fashioned could ever be. In fact, crushing it might be recommended, since the traditional large ice cube is relinquished for standard ice, and dilution is quick.
The Brick is full of surprises, and this light, coffee-enhanced old fashioned is just the tip of the iceberg.
