Brit Boy Street Food Is on a Roll—a Sausage Roll, That Is

by Tyler Shane

“We picked the perfect time to start a British-style restaurant company,” says Chris Thomas, reminiscing about feeding the England soccer team this summer during their World Cup KC stay.

In less than two years, Thomas’s savory pie and sausage roll pop-up, Brit Boy Street Food, has gone from a small local operation to feeding England soccer team captain Harry Kane a sausage roll—and earning a “divine” review from the hosts of BBC podcast Football Daily. Still, as the only British restaurant operation in Kansas City, Thomas is out to impress the locals, especially those who might have some preconceived notions about his motherland’s fare. One taste of his food and Thomas says any stereotypes of British food being “bland” go out the window.

Brit Boy’s menu consists of a few English classics, like steak, mushroom and ale pie and pork sausage rolls wrapped in a flaky pastry crust. He describes his pies as “shepherd’s pie-esque” in that none of them have crust; they’re all savory and finished with a hefty layer of buttery potatoes (even the flavors like birria and Philly cheesesteak). His pies are also sold frozen and meant to serve a similar purpose as, say, frozen pizza. On a night when you don’t want to cook or do dishes, you can throw a Brit Boy pie in the oven for an easy, quality, protein-heavy meal.

“Ultimately, I think we’re leaning on the staples of the Midwest,” says Thomas. “It’s meat and potatoes done right.”

Although Brit Boy’s menu relies heavily on pies, the traditional and spicy sausage rolls are becoming a standout. The USDA recently gave Brit Boy the seal of approval to sell meat products in grocery stores, opening the door to wider retail distribution, meaning you could soon find their products in your local grocery store.

Thomas pops up at farmers markets and festivals, but you can also place an order online (britboystreetfood.com) and then head to any of their 10 freezer pick-up locations around the city. As the cold weather approaches, don’t forget to place your pre-order for a shepherd’s pie, which Thomas says usually sells out quickly this holiday season.
