1221 Union Ave., KCMO

For those looking to tap into KC’s vibrant local music scene, start at The Ship. Tuesday nights reliably feature honky-tonk bands (with lots of two steppin’) while Thursday nights often host jazz acts in an intimate lounge setting. On the weekends, the club features music on two stages, spanning anything and everything from funk to hyperpop to punk.

1105 Hickory St., KCMO

This hi-fi cocktail lounge in the West Bottoms opened its doors almost three years ago and has since built a reputation as one of the city’s hottest nightlife hubs. But aside from the fashionable, plant-filled space, you’ll find meticulously curated performances with concert series like Global Groove and R&B artist Living Room by Hailes.

If you’d prefer to focus on the band instead of small talk, head to Ted’s Taproom. This new-ish jazz club in the Crossroads opened its doors in May and prides itself on being a listening room. The venue, which is open Tuesday through Saturday, kicks off its week with a jazz jam and features three acts each Friday and Saturday night.

Hillsiders

403 N. Fifth St., KCK

For a casual vibe, visit this Strawberry Hill neighborhood bar. Hillsiders features a considerable number of country and folk acts, but don’t be surprised if you stumble upon some free jazz, hip-hop or pop-punk here, too.

Musician Calvin Arsenia opens up his home, Greenwood Social Hall, for a cozy and intimate listening experience in the Westside. Plop down on one of the couches and you may just discover your new favorite singer-songwriter.

1520 Grand Blvd., KCMO

Your favorite indie artist may stop at recordBar on their national tour, but the Crossroads venue is also a reliable spot to catch KC bands. Keep an eye out for local album release shows, tribute bands and genre-diverse bills.

3810 Broadway Blvd., KCMO

recordBar’s sister venue in Midtown is, as its name implies, rather compact. With a well-rounded mix of local groups and under-the-radar touring acts, miniBar is an ideal spot for an intimate night of music.

Gnarly Hussle

6317 Raytown Road, Raytown

If your ideal weekend plans involve scouring for vintage wares and catching a concert, then kill two birds with one stone at Gnarly Hussle. Half bar and half thrift store, the Raytown establishment regularly hosts concerts on Saturday nights, spanning country, jazz, indie-rock
